For this project Océane chose to experiment with painting on a very unusual base – bin bags. Why bin bags? Plastic trash is the number one cause of unnatural deaths in sea turtles. Everyday, turtles eat plastic bags mistaking them for jellyfish, resulting in a choking death. Ironically, the three jellyfish represented – orange bell, box jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war – have a sting deadly to humans but harmless to turtles. I rendered the jellyfish in long fast strokes to create a sense of current and wild flow. This idea is reinforced in the installation as a fan blows onto the bin bags, making them undulate the way both bin bags and jellyfish do when they are carried in ocean currents.
